Top 7 tips to make sure your furniture fits in your new home

When thinking about downsizing, having a firm idea of the outcomes you are looking for in your new home is a great place to start.  What are the things that are not negotiable? Artwork? A special piece of furniture?

Although it is tempting to fit as much as possible, an overcrowded smaller home filled with larger furniture is unlikely to give you the relaxed and comfortable look and feel you’re after.

Look at your new floor plan and measurements and make sure the furniture you intend to take is going to fit.

For example, measure the bed and both bedside tables to ensure they will fit along the wall of the bedroom, leaving enough space for any mobility issues.

If you have other bedroom furniture such as a tallboy or a set of drawers, make sure it can be accommodated in the space. Do you need to think about replacing items with smaller ones?

This can often be true for lounge suites and dining room tables. Will you be entertaining en masse anymore? We hope not! Besides, a neat little lounge and a new round table might just give you the inspiration to have friends over for tea (or champagne)!

Assess whether all your clothes need to be stored in your built-in wardrobe? If you are moving to a two-bedroom home, will someone need to use the second bedroom wardrobe or do you get the whole thing to yourself? What’s the linen situation like? You may need this space for linen – best to just be prepared for less space.

By thoroughly assessing and measuring, you will have a better idea of the space available, and the number of belongings that will fit.

If you have a sideboard and several china cabinets and you are only taking one, not all the treasures will be able to go with you.
